C.W. Hart and C.H. Parr are the self-proclaimed founders of the tractor industry. They built their first tractor in 1902, and by 1905, Hart-Parr was the only American company specializing in tractors. In 1906, W.H. Williams, a Hart-Parr official, coined the term “tractor” to distinguish gasoline powered machines from steam traction engines. Custom operators used large tractors like this Hart-Parr "Old Reliable" 30-60 for plowing and road work; a total of 3798 units were built, which attests to their popularity in Western Canada. Clyde and L.M. Wight, brothers from the Carstairs AB area, did plowing and threshing with this tractor for many years.
The Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company was established in 1897 in Madison, Wisconsin by Charles W. Hart and Charles H. Parr, two friends who met at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where they worked together on a Special Honours Thesis on internal combustion engines. In 1901, the company moved to Charles City, Iowa, and in 1902, they built their first tractor.
