Description
A farm wagon with a red dual-hopper broadcast seeder mounted on the end. The wagon is green with a red gear, wheels, and seeder. The wagon seat is mounted on two elliptical springs above the box and has space for two people. The seeder is attached through a system of gears and chains to the rear right wheel; the movement of this wheel powers the agitators in the hoppers and the spinning discs underneath them. A team of two horses was required to effectively move this wagon.
More Information
Broadcast seeders mounted to the backs of wagons like this one were an important innovation in the history of farming. They were an improvement upon earlier methods of hand seeding, in which a person would haul a bag of seeds throughout the field and plant them manually. Broadcast seeding is not as controlled, but it is faster. Some broadcast seeders also included harrows, which would pull behind and bury the seeds; this particular vehicle, however, doesn’t have this capability and a plow or harrow would need to be run afterwards.
